not pretentious; just esoteric.

These cyanotype pieces are a result of experimentation with cyanotypes on different mediums, for glass and mirror gelatin is cooked with cyanotype chemistry to produce a solution that will bind to glass surfaces. Glass plates or broken mirror is coated with the emulsion and then exposed in sunlight using a negative processed from a digital photograph or composite and printed on transparent film. The full oxidation and vibrancy of the classic Prussian blue takes as long as 24 hours to fully develop and for the gelatin to harden, after which the broken mirror can be encased in resin acrylic, framed and arranged as unique pieces, or to be bleached or toned.

These pieces are part of ‘Worship’; an expression of awe and devotion to our planet that seeks to show the natural world in a delicate yet vacuous state, symbolizing the fragility of our ecosystems among the vast expanse of the universe. The series considers mankind’s role as stewards of this planet, the caretakers of one of the rarest atmospheres in the cosmos.
Whether you’re deliberately staring at the stars or it just happens to be a happy by-product of daydreaming, our solar system and unique atmosphere provides an ever changing canvas for us to gaze upon. At night, a window into endless galaxies and by day a reflection of nature’s mood.

These pieces are part of my ongoing series “Sensitometry Painting”. An Ode to the work of Ferdinand Hurter and Vero Driffield as the originators of ‘sensitometry’, the scientific study of light-sensitive materials, notably photographic film. Beginning with early black and white emulsions and evolving into the modern digital CMOS and newer sensors, the study has transformed the world, and will define modern history. Each of these pieces are created using the CMOS sensor as a paintbrush, the shutter is left open as the camera sweeps over color combinations in nature to produce an abstract brushstroke. Brushstrokes are then printed on metallic photo paper, which will generally discolor over time as it reacts to light, causing photodegradation, intentionally leaving each piece unique to its own history of lighting conditions. The photodegradation effect is exacerbated by hanging the uncovered face of the work in direct sunlight and can be minimized or halted by covering the face of the work with conservation grade UV protection glazing (glass).
